CRIC Cricothyrotomy Kit
 
Instruction and Use


Preparation:

Open package and remove contents and familiarize yourself with items

Option: Use of Chlorhexidine Wipes

1. Use as directed on package to prepare patient surface for incision

Step 1: Activate on-board light(s), use of power control panel on top of device

a. Press power button to activate visible-spectrum LED
b. (for Military Medical use): Press IR button to activate Infra-Red LED
Note: Lights will shut off automatically after 5 minutes.
Note: Infra-Red LED is visible with MILSPEC NVG or Scope

Step 2. Use of Retractable Scalpel

a. Push scalpel actuator button forward until it click-stops in place (#11 Scalpel blade is extended 12mm for safe-depth incision)
b. Make approximate 1.5-3" vertical skin incision
c. Make approximate 15mm wide horizontal incision in cric membrane (Make incision until resistance is felt)

Step 3. Use of Auto-insertion and tissue-extender

a. With continuing forward pressure on device, push actuator (winged shape) forward until it click stops
b. Tips will insert directly into incision area
c. While advancing actuator, rotate device 90° to horizontal position
Note: Repeat rotation as necessary to assure airway opening of tissue
d. at 14mm extension Retractable Scalpel will automatically retract
e. at full extension stainless steel tines will spread tissue 12+mm

Step 4. Insert and Secure Airway Tube

a. Insert tip of airway tube (or dilate with finger) between spreader tines and continue insertion of tube to assure airway
b. Use as directed on manufacturer’s instructions (included), secure with tiedown strap or other approved means of securing airway tube

Procedure Direction: securing patient neck and identifying incision area


a.Place patient in supine position and stabilize neck region (place pillow or similar such form under neck to hyperextend the neck.

b. Secure larynx laterally between the thumb and forefinger.

c. Find the cricothyroid ligament (midline between the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage. (this will be the primary incision site)
